Heading

We’re shifting the dial on sustainable packaging with innovative solutions that achieve the highest quality, and the least impact on the planet. For any sustainable solution to work, it has to be easy to get behind, which is why we use premium glass and aluminium. More than merely recyclable and reusable, these materials have a virtually endless life – which means there is no reason for them to end up in landfill, ever. In our eyes, that makes glass and aluminium superior to plastic in every way.

Why glass is better

Our high-quality, tinted apothecary-style glass jars and bottles have been a fixture of Antipodes from the beginning. Why are we so we passionate about glass? It’s simply superior.

Glass maintains the potency of your formulation, ensuring the preservation of active ingredients and preventing oxidisation. Recyclable kerbside by most mainstream programmes, glass has an almost unlimited life. It can be recycled over and over again and melted down to make new glass products without losing its inherent quality.

Glass is an industry with less virgin raw material consumption, which means less air and water pollution, less volume in landfill, and lower carbon emissions.

Our masks, and a selected range of products, are packaged in sleek aluminium tubes. Aluminium is recyclable almost indefinitely – with most of the aluminium ever produced still in use today.

100% plastic-free packaging

Low waste. High quality. Soon to be plastic-free.

In 2021, we removed plastic shrink wrapping from our products and transitioned the remainder of our core range to recyclable glass and aluminium. We even gave our plastic tamper seals a makeover, working with a company in Christchurch, in New Zealand’s South Island, who have developed an innovative seal made from wood-pulp. You’ll see those changes rolling out gradually in the months to come.

Right now, we’re sitting at approximately 93% plastic-free – a number we’ll increase as new technologies emerge.

We’ve successfully developed an aluminium lid for our Lime Caviar Collagen-Rich Firming Cream, and we’re working on solutions for the non-recyclable components of our packaging, such as serum droppers. We’ll never compromise the quality of our formulations, so patience – and countless hours of research – is key.

Supporting responsible forestry

Forests are our lifeblood, so we consider it our duty to protect them. Our cardboard recyclable packaging is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This mark confirms that the cardboard has come from forestry practices that are ethical, maintain biodiversity, uphold worker rights, and do not result in deforestation.

Our packaging is printed just 20 minutes from Antipodes HQ by our trusted partner, who uses environmentally friendly eco-inks from vegetables.

Of course, the FSC mark isn’t worth the paper it’s written on if it’s printed with toxic ink. The European Commission reports that offset printing consumes an eye-watering three million tonnes of hydrocarbon-based inks and chemicals each year. These release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to global warming and can harm the health of workers in the global print industry.

Our sustainable packaging is printed just 20 minutes from Antipodes HQ by our trusted partner, who has worked with us from the beginning of the brand. They use environmentally friendly eco-inks from vegetables, which are biodegradable; require less solvents to be cleaned from machinery; and pose no threat to the health of humans of the environment.

We are committed to reducing non recyclable packaging wherever possible, which is why we forego cardboard boxes when we can (for example, our generously sized cleansers come ‘naked’). We also use innovations such as single panel, glue-free cardboard gift boxes and honeycomb paper padding instead of bubble wrap.

Our packaging goals

100% plastic-free packaging

That means zero plastic in our core natural skincare range. This is challenging, as some components do not yet have plastic-free alternatives. As new innovations come to market, we’re confident in a plastic-free future.

CURRENT STATUS

93% plastic-free across the Antipodes skincare range

100% kerbside recyclable*

We want every component of our packaging to be able to be recycled through your local council programme. Every town, city, borough, suburb, and even street has different rules – so we’re going to start with New Zealand.

CURRENT STATUS

Our glass, aluminium, and paper materials can be recycled in most markets. We’re researching alternatives for componentry that can’t be recycled.

Aluminium lids

Aluminium lids are recyclable and plastic-free, but pose unique challenges to get them to sit right on the jar, avoid dents and nicks, and scale production across our full range.

CURRENT STATUS

We did it! Lime Caviar Collagen-Rich Firming Cream, launched in March 2023, is our first product in 100% plastic-free packaging, thanks to a new kerbside-recyclable aluminium lid. Lime Caviar’s aluminium lid is exclusive to AntipodesNature.com.
