Curls and coils aren’t simply a variation of straight hair.

Understanding how to enhance curls naturally begins with recognising what makes hair curly and how curl patterns behave. This guide explores why hair is curly, how to identify your curl type, and how to care for curls and coils so they stay healthy and naturally defined.

What makes hair curly?

Your hair texture is shaped by the hair follicle and how each strand grows from your scalp. Straight hair usually grows from round follicles. Curly and coily hair grows from more oval or asymmetrical follicles, which cause the hair strand to bend as it grows – creating waves, curls or coils. Curly hair also has a different cuticle structure. Instead of lying flat, the cuticle layers tend to lift and overlap slightly. This makes it easier for moisture to move in and out of the hair fibre. The tighter the curl, the more places moisture can escape. That’s why curly and coily hair is naturally more prone to dryness, frizz and breakage – and why hydration and gentle care matter so much.

What is my curl type?
Curl patterns explained.

Curl patterns are often described using a numerical system, based on how the hair naturally bends or coils:

Wavy (Type 2) Hair forms loose S-shaped waves rather than full curls. It may sit flatter at the roots and become more defined through the lengths and ends.

Curly (Type 3) Hair forms visible curls or spirals from root to tip. Curls can range from loose ringlets to tighter, springy curls.

Coily or textured (Type 4) Hair forms very tight curls or coils with a dense texture. Shrinkage is common, meaning hair may look much shorter when dry.

Each curl pattern behaves differently, but curls and coils share common needs: consistent hydration, strength without stiffness, and routines that minimise friction. Antipodes founder and CEO Elizabeth Barbalich has type 3b curls, and she believes that curls should be supported rather than suppressed.

For decades, much of the haircare category has been designed around straight or lightly wavy hair.

As a result, people with curls and coils are often left adapting products that weren’t created with their hair structure in mind. This can mean:

  • formulas that are too drying
  • routines that rely on heat or friction
  • advice that prioritises control over curl health

Why is curly hair more prone to dryness?

Curly hair loses moisture more easily because the twists and bends in the strand make it harder for natural scalp oils to travel from the root to the ends. In curls and coils, the bends in the strand interrupt this process. As a result, curls often require additional conditioning and hydration to remain elastic, smooth and resilient. Without enough moisture, curls can become frizzy, dull or more fragile.

Dedicated testing for curly, coily, and textured hair

Curly, coily, and textured hair is underserved in mainstream haircare. That’s why we conducted a separate trial for this hair type. 71 participants in the UK with curls, and coils hair trialled our Lime Caviar Intense Nourishment Hair Mask.

88% said curl definition improved the day after use
97% said their hair looks and feels healthier
85% said their curls felt stronger and resilient to breakage

We also received feedback that this mask works beautifully as a leave-in curl cream for tight curls and coils.

What curly hair really needs to stay healthy

Enhancing curls isn’t about taming them. It’s about creating the right conditions for curls to form naturally.

Moisture comes first Curly and coily hair loses moisture more easily. Consistent hydration helps curls remain elastic, defined and less prone to frizz.

Strength without rigidity Curls benefit from care that supports resilience and elasticity, rather than stiffness that can lead to breakage.

Gentle handling Friction from rough towel drying, aggressive brushing or frequent heat styling can disrupt curl patterns. Low-friction routines help preserve natural shape.

Cuticle support A smoother cuticle allows curls to clump more effectively, improving definition and shine.

How to enhance curls naturally

Cleanse gently Avoid harsh cleansing systems that strip natural oils. Gentle, scalp-first cleansing helps preserve moisture while keeping the scalp comfortable.

Condition consistently Conditioning helps curls clump and form more defined patterns. Silicone-free formulas allow moisture to penetrate rather than coat the hair.

Use a hair mask regularly For curls and coils, a hair mask can be an essential step – supporting hydration, strength and resilience, particularly for type 3 and type 4 curls and coils.

Dry with intention Pat or squeeze hair gently rather than rubbing. Allow curls to form naturally, using hands rather than brushes while hair is wet.

Choosing the right haircare range for curly hair

When enhancing curls, the most effective approach is to choose haircare based on your overall hair goals rather than curl type alone. All Antipodes haircare ranges are suitable for curly and coily hair, and are named to reflect what they’re designed to support rather than being formulated for one specific concern.

Each range focuses on a different priority – repair and nourish, smooth and hydrate, or volume and shine – making it easier to select what your hair needs most. Fragrance is also clearly signposted within each range name, allowing you to choose based on both performance and personal preference.

A simple routine for curls and coils

Consistency matters more than complexity.
A balanced curly hair routine:

  • Cleanse gently to preserve natural oils
  • Condition consistently to support curl formation
  • Use Antipodes Lime Caviar Intense Nourishment Hair Mask regularly for hydration and strength
  • Minimise friction during drying
  • Style lightly, allowing curls to form naturally

All Antipodes haircare formulas are designed to support a curl enhancing hair routine.
